Education vs. Entertainment & The Compound Effect

Look… basically you need to fuckin’ DECIDE… make a damn decision about the direction you want to take your life and then you need to DO SHIT to move your ship in that direction….

If you’re not seeking out information, and if you’re not directed your own education, YOU’RE GOING TO LOSE…. you’re going to have a hard time.

All great people… those who live really dope and amazing lives… they ALL… THEY ALL READ BOOKS.

All of the friends, and the people I know who are DOING COOL SHIT… THEY ALL READ BOOKS.

It’s like the biggest, most obvious “secret” to success…

You need to learn as much as you possibly can my friends…

And then, do you know what you do after that… YOU FUCKIN’ LEARN SOME MORE!

It’s doesn’t stop.

You need to seek continual, never-ending improvement and development.

And if you don’t STEP UP… and if you don’t DIRECT that improvement, NO ONE ELSE WILL.

If you did nothing but just simply read books, your life will be completely different in just a few years (in a really dope, amazing way).

What I said in the video, just written out for you to read:

“Hey folks, what’s happening! Matt Horwitz, hope you’re well…

I wanted to share two concepts w/ you this morning..

Don’t mind the background noise, they’re working on the roof next door.

I want to talk to you about “Education vs. Entertainment” and “The Compound Effect”…

“Entertainment vs. Education” and “The Compound Effect”…

there’s not really many secrets out there to what it takes to…. to do what you want in life, to go after your dreams and desires, and make that happen…

One of the key differentiators between those who live an interesting, cool, amazing life, built around their passions, interests and desires, and those that live the pre-designed program…

… is that people in Group A… we’ll call this “Group A”, we’ll call this “Group B”.

People in Group A, those that lead and live really cool, amazing, dope lives, right?…

… they take their free time, and not all the time, 100% of the time, but they take the majority of their free time and spend it on education…

They spend it on learning… and I don’t mean you have to go to a university and shell out a degree…

But, self-directed learning, self-directed education…

I just found myself this morning… like, here it is… it’s Sunday morning, I’m reading a great book on business branding and marketing…

But people in Group A, they spend their free time on learning, on new experiences, on bettering themselves…

Where Group B, which unfortunately is the large majority of the population…. hopefully that’s not always the case in the future… they spend their free time on basically, bullshit entertainment.

So they’re really not fueling and feeding their minds, and their brains, and their ideas… they’re not in tune with their world, with their emotions, with their feelings…

And… it’s frankly just a pretty boring and bullshit path, right?

So if you watch my videos, I’m assuming that you’re either in Group A, or you’re heading in that direction.

And a lot people think that “successful” people… that people who do amazing… and big things, have all of these secrets, and it’s really just…

Very small… very profound… things, done consistently over time with The Compound Effect… this is the second thing I wanted to talk to you about…

The Compound Effect is basically… these little small actions, right?

This might not change my world, reading this book, but if I spend a couple Sundays a year reading…

Just that… just a couple Sundays a year reading, right?

Do you think takes a lot of work?…

No. It doesn’t.

Just a couple Sundays a year reading, alright? Compared to me not reading at all…

You take a guy who read and and a guy who didn’t read… 10 years later…

Which person, which version of me do you think is going to be in a better situation, right?

Think about it…

A ship heading east in the ocean, right?… if you change its course of direction 1 degree… just 1 degree, right?…

1 degree… that’s like reading 2 book a year, right?

You change that ship’s course of direction 1 degree… 2,000 miles later, it’s going to be on a whole other majestic island…

and do you where this guy’s going…

I don’t know… some fuckin’ boring tourist town or something… or he’s going to going to crash into a rock, right?

You get the metaphor, so…

Take your free time…

Make free time if you don’t have it…

And DIRECT your education and your learning into your interests, your passions, your desires, your goals…. and things that you want to CREATE in life…

AND… consistently… I’m not talking you gotta do this every day, or every week…

Just do it a couple times a month, right?

But… let that kick in, over a number of years… and the compound effect… which equates to exponentional growth, right?

It’s a curve that goes like this… where as linear growth is just…. you know…

Actually that wasn’t a good example, but linear growth is… is not so much like this, rather….

Scratch that…

Exponential is more powerful… where linear… ahhhh…. forget the linear/exponential shit… I just totally screwed that up and I don’t feel like shooting this video again and editing….

Forget whatever the heck I was saying there, but…

You get the point of this video, right? You get the point of the message…

Damn, I really wanted to get that exponential thing correct, but whatever…

‘Cause I was like, “Oh yea, this one… but this one’s much worse”… and I was like, “Oh shit, it’s going higher”… scratch it.

So… spend your free time and direct your education…

Like, it’s really not that hard guys, it’s really not that hard to go on Amazon.com, spend $10 book… read this for a few hours… and shit, you’re life’s gonna be fuckin’ better…

You’re going to be able to do stuff you want to do, and I’m using this sort of language and emphasis, and emotion, and enthusiasm because….

Because I meet a lot of people who aren’t doing anything fuckin’ interesting with their life…

And they think it’s really hard… and they…. it’s because they’re not… they’re not EDUCATING THEMSELVES… they’re not reading books….

They’re not reading blogs… they’re not listening to podcasts… they’re not listening to audiobooks… they’re not going to seminars and events, and meetups….

They’re not doing things to take their life and move it in a good direction.

So… hope this message resonates with you…

If it does, what can you do in your life to take the direction of your ship and steer it, at least 1 degree into something that’s going to be much better…

So… keep rockin’ my friends, I hope you’re well.

Self-directed education… it’s one of the “secrets”… it’s really not a secret… just fuckin’ read books.

Talk to you soon, be well, peace.”

Read books my friends… direct your education.

Great in your face post Matt! I can’t tell you how many hours have been sucked out of my life watching useless entertainment. And worse still, the additional wasted time bothering to watch a rerun. My turnaround came by turning off the cable. Initially I did it out of budgetary concerns, but now I get so much more accomplished and read it’s amazing. I am glad I cut the cord.

Glad you liked the message Luci, and my style lol ;)

I haven’t had cable since 2007, and I don’t miss it one bit. Watching TV is almost painful to me… so much garbage.

The analogy I told someone once is that cable is like being force-fed crap… sure you have selection (ie, channels)… but it’s all pre-selected force-fed crap.

With the internet, books, and new media, one can SEEK OUT the answers they want. What a world of potentiality!

I’m glad to hear you cut the cord (love that literal metaphor!)

Dude…the screenshot…and then starting the video with the casual drink from the cup…send this to Ralph Lauren, model man. Brilliance.

Fantastic message…it reminds me of the “living in the mind” fallacy. Our mind tells us that all we know is all we will ever know. Especially in those dark moments of despair. When we’re in a low mental vibration, the last thing we want to do is pick up a book. It feels like we’ll be in a bad mood forever.

But what if reading books becomes a coping mechanism for dealing with life?! Now that is some exponential growth!

hahhaha… love it man, thanks ! Always looking to increase the skills (in this case, Keynote & Photoshop). Good points Josh… books are powerful.

I met a really unique and powerful girl many years ago… she told me her secret to her success: books, people, and experience. Simple, yet profound.

Loved the message Matt! You’re totally right. Readers are leaders. Now I’m not dissing the educational system but I didn’t go to college and am living my dream life in Hawaii. I got here buy reading a ton of books and investing in my education. It’s crazy how people don’t want to invest $10 in a book. I’m like hello are you crazy?! Think about the return on investment… anyways great message and I love your passion you emit.

Perfect example of the power of self-directed education… I think you’re WAY smarter than many “educated” people I know.

And so true, the ROI is ridiculous!

Sometimes the biggest secrets are right there out in the open ;)
